How your GPA is calculated

American universities, including AUIS, calculate each semester's GPA in the following way:

1. Grades are assigned a numerical value (grade points) on the following scale:

A    = 4.0

A-   = 3.7

B+  = 3.3

B    = 3.0

B -  = 2.7

C + = 2.3

C    = 2.0

C -  = 1.7

D+  = 1.3

D     = 1.0

No other grades and symbols (i.e., W, I) are used in the calculation of the GPA.

2. Grades are given a weight by multiplying the number of grade points by the number of credits. So, for instance, an A in a four credit course is worth more than an A in a 1 credit course.

3. Your semester GPA is calculated based on the following equation:

SUM of ALL WEIGHTED GRADE POINTS (grade points multiplied by credits) / SUM OF CREDITS

So, for instance:

You recieve an A (4.0) in a 3 credit class, a B (3.0) in a 3 credit class and an D in a 4 credit class.

(4.0 x 3.0) = 12

(3.0 x 3) = 9

(1.0 x 4) = 4

12 + 9 + 4 = 25 total points; 10 total credits

GPA = 25/10 = 2.5

4. Calculating your CUMULATIVE GPA.

In addition to a semester GPA, AUIS calculates a cumulative - or total - grade point average for each AUIS student.

AUIS does not calculate this by averaging your semester GPA's. Rather, we total all your weighted grade points and divide by total credits.

In order to do this, you use the following equation:

total grade points (add up all grade points) / total credits.

For instance:

You have been an AUIS student for two semester. The first semster you had the following grades:

(3 grade points, 3 credits) = 9 weighted grade points; (4 grade points, 3 credits) = 12 weighted grade points; (1 grade point, 3 credits) = 3 weighted grade points;

First semester total weighted grade points = 9+12+3= 24 weighted grade points and 9 total credits

Second semester you earn:

(2 grade points, 3 credits) = 6 weighted grade points; (3 grade points, 3 credits) = 9 weighted grade points; (2 grade point, 3 credits) = 6 weighted grade points;

First semester total weighted grade points = 6+9+6= 21 weighted grade points and total credits

So, to get your cumulative GPA you add grade points (24 + 21 = 45) and divide by total credits (45/18) =  2.5
