Two groups of AUIS students are participating in the 3rd Annual Hult Global Case Challenge, a contest between groups of university students meant to tackle social issues. This year’s HGCC deals with how to make an impact on Global Poverty through improvements in education, energy and housing. Both teams of AUIS students chose to discuss how to maximize the impact of education through distributional innovations for the non-governmental organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC.)

AUIS students Kazho Muhsin, Mina Bassam, Bazz Dlshad, Dashne Jalal and Rawaz Samal came together to form the team Empower Iraq. They propose that OLPC should use young IT students to train marginalized women in computer skills. The women will be in charge of teaching computer skills to children, targeting Iraqi youth both in school and in refugee camps.

The second group of AUIS students consists of Sivan Salam Saeed, Azad Fatah, Leelav Bilind, Mahmood Shawkat and Shayan Diyar. Their group, Save Future Generations (SFG) aims to hire 4th-year university students to train children in developing countries to use OLPC laptops. In addition, they plan to collaborate with various NGOs to ensure that children are not only trained how to use computers, but that they have access to suitable nutrition and credit.

The winning team from each track, in each regional and virtual competition, will advance to an all-expense paid global final in New York City. Each team will be given the opportunity to present their solution to a world-class panel of executive judges, attended by former President Bill Clinton. The winning team will receive $1M to implement their plan in pilot projects across the developing world.
